SIP stands for session initiation protocol and it is complementary with voice over internet protocol phones. SIP is not only used in VoIP, but in many other multimedia technologies as well including online videos, games, etc. H.323 was the signaling protocol used for VoIP service before the development of SIP, but nowadays it has replaced H.323 to a very large extent.

SIP works like many other protocols available like HTTP, SMTP and signals are carried out by sending some messages contain only the useful information. It is responsible to deal with the communication sessions including the time periods of communication between communicating parties. Signaling for termination, modification and creation of sessions with one or more parties is provided by SIP. It provides the services for internet telephone calls, distribution, multimedia conference, etc.

Any type of IP phone can't work properly without any signaling protocol and SIP play a very important role in the working of these phones.
